THE 50 LOVERS THAT LIVE IN MY BODY
the 50 lovers that live inside my body
go out nightly in search of another 50 lovers

just like 50 windows
each one concealed behind 50 pairs of eyes

50 different outcomes
each representing owners of 50 different colours

50 love-letters carried by 50 pigeons
permutated in the plazas of 50 modern city buildings

the wind disappears from my 50 dreams
leaving 50 nights, while my 50 passions
are asking:

why can there only be 50?
The picture was meant to be a depiction of the 50 lovers he speaks of within the poem, and the 50 people placed to shape the form of a heart, is meant to be a a visual of the representation of the love he experienced.
Chen Kehua was born in Hualian, he worked as a ophthalmologist at a veterans hospital, his poems were meant to explore the darkness of the human minds which he explored due to his work.                                                                                      5 Facts

  • Spends time doing contract operations and his poems his poems reflect his findings.
  • Expresses the ideals of consumer society due to the fact that it played a major role within his early years of life.
  • He expresses his Buddhist  beliefs.
  • Uses poetic mind games to emphasis the meanings of his poems
  • Uses his experiences of past rejections as poetic material
I believe that the poem is speaking of chance by using the metaphor of 50 lovers as an example, because of how he speaks of each of the 50 different relationships that one person and each one of these relationships I believe the speaker was involved in had been in as individual relationships which all have a different outcome. The usage of figurative language is very direct since the poem it self is a metaphor, and this allows for the reader to have many different interpretations of the poem. The poem uses an individual stanza to highlight different scenarios of 50 to help apply visual to the message of the poem, and the form of the poem helps emphasize the questioning tone of the poem, because of the writer is trying to express his wanting to know what would happen in each scenario he portrays him self in ; and each component of the poem, tone, form, language( etc...) helps tie in the theme of the poem: " For what ever scenario you are in there can only be one outcome".
