Look to this day:
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence.
The bliss of growth,
Plain Field in Front of Mountain PeakThe glory of action,
The splendor of achievement
Are but experiences of time.

For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision;
And today well-lived, makes
Yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well therefore to this day;
Such is the salutation to the ever-new dawn!
-Kalidasa

This image displays layers of material that compliment the poems references to time and achievement. the water reflecting the mountains and trees shows a vision of yesterday, the trees are a middle ground that show today, and the mountains are tomorrow showing the heights that can be reached.

Kalidasa was married to Princess Vidyottama. When his wife embarrassed him, he was going to attempt suicide; however, he encountered his goddess Kali who blessed him with wit. Kalidasa lived in approximately 370-450 AD. He is believed to have lived in the Himalayas, probably around Uijain.

Kalidasa relates one day to an entire life in this poem. He believes that life is made up of repeating days, and a positive attitude along with hard work, and achievement, will create a hopeful future, joyful past, and a good day. The author, being from Hindu India, and having the ability to write, would probably be considered peaceful, and intellectual. his views on the importance of positive thinking and progress are likely related to his religious and cultural practices along with his advanced intelligence. To describe the thought of the past, Kalidasa uses phrases like, "yesterday is but a dream". This portrays the past as something vague and unrealistic. The author also says things like," the bliss of growth", and, "the glory of action". this shows the simple pleasures that can occur in the present that enlighten memories and the future. Although there is no rhyme scheme in the poem, it is separated into two stanzas. the first stanza emphasizes the comparison of one day to and entire life, and the second stanza shows what this mindset can effect in your daily life. I would consider this poem to have a very peaceful and selfless tone. Kalidasa seems to have wrote this with the intent of improving peoples lives by changing their perspective. This tone is portrayed through phrases such as, "bliss", or, "dream of happiness". the tone helps refine the theme that the shortness of days/life does not define the quality of output of that time, only attitude.

  1. I agree that this poem is about making the most of your life, comparing it to only one day. I also feel that Kalidasa's poem could be comparing one day to a lifetime to simplify his message. The poem tells the reader that growth and experience come with time. They way he delivers the message is calming and encouraging. It would be easy to write that time is looming over, but he is reassuring that things will come if you work towards your goals. I feel that the use of vague language was chosen because it is able to resonate with more people than a personal and specific poem.

  2. I agree that this poet views the past as fleeting and quickly gone and forgotten. I think that the tone of this poem in inspirational. Kalidasa seems to be proud of his beliefs in how to live each day to the fullest. When I read the poem in came across as quite persuasive, and it felt like the poet wanted to change your life for the better. The first stanza seems to concentrate on the realization that life is short, and the second stanza talked more about seizing the day and being proud of the life you live.

  3. This poem talks about how you need to live in the present day and not dwell on the past or what is to come. The poets tone is very reassuring, making it seem like everything will be ok and will get better. Kalidasa has a very hopeful and positive view on life and takes life on a day at a time. She shows her approach on life in an inspiring and uplifting way. Because of the choice of words the message is clearly revealed and easily identified.

  4. This poet portrays an inspirational message that you should live life to its fullest in the present. The word choice is very simple and calming that I not only feel that Kalidasa published this to send out a message but also it may have something to deal with Kalidasa as a person. I feel like when his wife set off a bad expression towards him, he made this poem as in a tribute to her to say that from now on he will forget the struggles of the past and move on. He emphasizes on tomorrow being " a vision of hope" to say that as things happen and at times where you feel like it's not going to get better at least have hope for the next day in your life to get better, but don't forget that you live to learn. Kalidasa also touches on the idea to have courage and to be kind.
